B12 is stored mostly in the liver. An adult body holds roughly 2 to 5 mg in total, nearly half of it in the liver, and loses only about 0.1% per day, mainly through bile. Those reserves can cover several months, sometimes years. That is both good news and a trap: a deficiency can take years to show up, so a diet that has been short on B12 for a long time gives no warning until the reserves run out. For ovo-lacto vegetarians, these are the simplest source. You will find B12 in:
- Cheeses, especially hard ones like Gruyère, cheddar, or gouda.
- Milk and yogurt, with varying amounts.
- Eggs, where B12 is concentrated mainly in the yolk.
These sources cover part of your needs, but rarely on their own for someone who eats little of them. A varied diet remains desirable, and an occasional check does no harm.
2. Fortified Plant Foods
Many manufacturers fortify their products with B12. It is commonly found in:
- Plant beverages (soy, almond, oat, rice).

- Breakfast cereals and some bars.
- Fortified yeast extracts, such as Marmite.

Spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed. Spirulina mostly contains pseudo-vitamin B12, a corrinoid with a similar structure but no vitamin activity, sometimes wrongly presented as B12. - Have your status checked now and then, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, long-term treatment (metformin, antacids), or after age 60.
